Providers
A GLP-1 prescription can come from several different kinds of clinicians. Here's a plain-English map of who's who — not a recommendation of where to go.
Primary care physician
Often the first conversation, especially if you already have an established relationship and health records in one place.
Endocrinologist
A specialist in hormones and metabolism, commonly involved for diabetes management and sometimes for complex weight management cases.
Obesity medicine specialist
A physician with specific training in weight management as its own medical specialty, not just a byproduct of another condition.
Telehealth platforms
Online-first services that connect patients with prescribers remotely. Quality, oversight, and pricing structures vary significantly between platforms.
In normal English
In-network vs out-of-network
A provider your insurance has a contract with (in-network) usually costs you less than one it doesn't (out-of-network) — worth checking before you book, especially with telehealth platforms.
Worth knowing
Some telehealth platforms operate on a cash-pay, subscription model rather than billing insurance directly — which can simplify pricing but may cost more than an in-network visit, depending on your coverage.
There's no universally "best" type of provider — the right choice depends on your existing care relationships, your insurance, your comfort with telehealth, and how complex your health history is.
